How to Import Natural Stone from China: A Complete Buyer's Guide

Importing stone from China can save 30–60% compared to local suppliers — but only if you know how to find a reliable factory, verify quality and manage logistics. This guide covers everything.

China is the world's largest producer and exporter of natural stone, accounting for over 40% of global stone exports. Shandong, Fujian and Guangdong provinces are the main production centres, with Laizhou in Shandong being particularly renowned for granite processing. Importing directly from a Chinese factory can save 30–60% compared to buying from a local importer or distributor.

The first step is finding a reliable factory. Avoid trading companies and agents — they add margin without adding value. Look for factories with ISO 9001 certification, a verifiable production facility (ask for a video tour), and a track record of exporting to your country. Check for CE marking if you are importing to Europe, and ask for test reports to ASTM or EN standards.

Always request samples before placing a bulk order. A reputable factory will ship samples at cost or free of charge for qualified buyers. Evaluate the sample for colour consistency, surface quality, dimensional accuracy and finish. Compare the sample against your specification before approving production.

Payment terms for first orders are typically 30% deposit, 70% balance before shipment (T/T). Established buyers can negotiate 30/70 with balance against copy of Bill of Lading, or Letter of Credit (L/C) for larger orders. Avoid paying 100% upfront to an unknown supplier.

Shipping options include FCL (Full Container Load — 20ft or 40ft) and LCL (Less than Container Load). A 20ft container holds approximately 20–25 tonnes of stone; a 40ft holds 25–28 tonnes. LCL is suitable for smaller orders but costs more per tonne. Transit time from Qingdao or Shanghai to Europe is typically 25–35 days; to the US East Coast 28–35 days; to Australia 18–25 days.

Import duties vary by country and product. In the EU, natural stone typically attracts 0–3.7% import duty depending on the product code. In the USA, Section 301 tariffs may apply to certain stone products from China — check the current HTS code classification with your customs broker. Australia has a free trade agreement with China (ChAFTA) that reduces or eliminates duties on most stone products.
