Natural Stone Surface Finishes: A Complete Guide for Buyers

Polished, honed, flamed, bush-hammered, sandblasted — the surface finish you choose affects both the appearance and performance of natural stone. Here is what you need to know.

The surface finish of natural stone is one of the most important decisions in any specification. It affects the stone's appearance, slip resistance, maintenance requirements and suitability for different environments. Here is a complete guide to the most common finishes available from Kingstone.

Polished finish is achieved by grinding the stone surface with progressively finer abrasives until a mirror-like gloss is produced. Polished stone has the highest gloss level (typically 80+ GU), the most vivid colour and pattern, and the lowest porosity of any finish. It is ideal for interior floors, countertops, wall panels and any application where visual impact is the priority. Not recommended for wet or outdoor areas due to slip risk.

Honed finish is a matte or satin finish produced by stopping the polishing process before the final gloss stage. Honed stone has a smooth, flat surface without the reflective gloss of polished stone. It is more forgiving of scratches and watermarks, making it popular for bathroom floors, kitchen countertops and commercial interiors.

Flamed finish is produced by applying a high-temperature flame to the stone surface, causing the surface minerals to spall and create a rough, textured surface. Flamed stone has excellent slip resistance (PTV 40+) and is the standard finish for exterior paving, pool surrounds and any wet outdoor application. The thermal process also enhances the colour contrast in granite.

Bush-hammered finish is produced by striking the stone surface with a mechanical hammer fitted with a grid of pyramid-shaped points. The result is a uniformly textured, non-slip surface with a rustic appearance. Popular for paving, steps and exterior cladding where a more natural look is desired.

Sandblasted finish is produced by blasting the stone surface with fine sand or grit under high pressure. The result is a smooth but matte, slightly textured surface. Sandblasting is often used for memorial stones, decorative panels and any application where a soft, even texture is desired.

Kingstone can apply all of the above finishes in-house. We can also produce combination finishes — for example, a polished face with a flamed border — for decorative applications. Contact our technical team to discuss the right finish for your project.
