Why Basalt Is the Best Natural Stone for Outdoor Paving

Basalt is gaining popularity among landscape architects and contractors for outdoor paving. Here is why this volcanic stone outperforms granite and limestone in many outdoor applications.

Basalt is a fine-grained volcanic rock formed from rapidly cooled lava. It is one of the most abundant rocks on earth and has been used as a building material for thousands of years. In recent years, it has become increasingly popular for outdoor paving, pool surrounds and landscape design — and for good reason.

Basalt is extremely hard and dense, with a compressive strength typically exceeding 200 MPa — higher than most granites. Its very low water absorption (typically less than 0.5%) makes it highly resistant to frost damage, making it suitable for cold climates where freeze-thaw cycles can crack more porous stones.

The natural surface of basalt is rough and non-slip, making it ideal for pool surrounds, wet areas and public spaces where slip resistance is a safety requirement. Bush-hammered and flamed basalt achieve PTV values well above the 36 minimum required for wet pedestrian areas under BS 7976.

Aesthetically, basalt's dark grey to black colour creates a striking contrast with green landscaping, light-coloured buildings and water features. It has a clean, contemporary look that suits modern architecture and landscape design. Unlike granite, basalt has a very uniform colour and texture with minimal variation between pieces.

Kingstone supplies Chinese basalt (Fujian and Hainan provinces) in a range of formats — paving slabs, setts, stepping stones, pool coping, wall cladding and custom shapes. Available finishes include honed, bush-hammered, flamed and natural split. Contact us for samples and pricing.
