Granite vs Marble: Which Natural Stone Is Right for Your Project?
Both granite and marble are premium natural stones — but they perform very differently. This guide helps architects, contractors and homeowners choose the right material for their application.
Granite and marble are two of the most popular natural stones in construction and interior design. Both are quarried from the earth, both are beautiful, and both carry a premium image. But they are fundamentally different materials with different properties, maintenance requirements and ideal applications.
Granite is an igneous rock formed from cooled magma. It is extremely hard (6–7 on the Mohs scale), highly resistant to scratching and heat, and has very low water absorption. This makes it ideal for kitchen countertops, exterior cladding, paving and any application where durability is paramount.
Marble is a metamorphic rock formed from recrystallised limestone. It is softer than granite (3–4 on the Mohs scale), more porous, and susceptible to etching from acidic substances. However, its distinctive veining and luminous surface make it the material of choice for luxury interiors, hotel lobbies, bathroom vanities and decorative applications.
For exterior applications — façade cladding, paving, kerbstones — granite is almost always the better choice. Its hardness and low porosity mean it withstands weathering, frost and heavy traffic without deterioration. Marble is better reserved for interior applications where it can be properly maintained.
Cost is another consideration. Granite is generally more affordable than marble, particularly for standard colours like G603 grey or G654 dark grey. Premium marbles — Carrara, Calacatta, Statuario — command significant premiums. However, Chinese white marble and grey marble offer excellent value at a fraction of Italian marble prices.
